All but one of La Liga's 20 teams got involved with the competition's new matchday broadcast features last weekend: Real Madrid
Not taking any part in the new voluntary extra features earned Madrid zero points last weekend. Furthermore, Ancelotti and his players missing their required media duties, such as post-match interviews with rights holders, will also cost the Bernabeu club when the calculations are being made.
It remains to be seen whether Madrid change their policy for future games, starting with Saturday evening’s trip to Almeria. La Liga also expects Los Blancos to permit the movement of cameras into new positions and areas of the Bernabeu for games over the course of the season, including at least inside the visitors’ dressing room and by their bench.
La Liga has not made public exactly how the calculations are made, but continuing to boycott all the new voluntary broadcasting initiatives would mean a cut of about €13m from Madrid’s total La Liga broadcast revenue for 2023-24. Even for a club with an annual income of well over €800m, that is a significant cost. But it may not be enough for Perez and Madrid to change tack and embrace Tebas’ new measures.Subscribe to The Athletic for in-depth coverage of your favorite players, teams, leagues and clubs.
