While most of the high schools in the top ten of Children At Risk’s 2022 rankings in the Houston region are small schools of choice or are situated in affluent neighborhoods, several campuses bucked the trends.
2022 rankings in the Houston region are small schools of choice or are located in affluent neighborhoods, several campuses bucked that trend.
But most large comprehensive high schools struggle in these ratings, and far more Houston-area students attend 'F' ranked schools than 'A' ranked schools. Brandi Brotherton, principal of Alief Early College High School, said the culture the campus and its community has led to great student outcomes. Her school earned a Gold Ribbon School, an accolade for high-performing schools serving mostly at-risk or economically disadvantaged students,
The campus, with under 500 students, puts kids on the fast track to college by enrolling them high in both high school and college classes at Houston Community College. The students earn their high school diploma and an associate’s degree upon graduation and enter college as juniors. In many cases, students have graduated with enough scholarship money to pay for their education through graduate school.
The campus added one additional counselor to its staff in the return to in-person instruction, making a total of six counselors at the school, including one focused on college and career-readiness. This is the third time that the New Caney ISD school has ranked high in the Houston education advocacy and research nonprofit Children At Risk’s annual high school rankings.
“These are kids that are at-risk, but they’re showing up because they want to,” she said. “And they want to because their teachers want to.”
