In late 2021, Montgomery based artist Michelle Browder unveiled her monument dedicated to the unwilling subjects of Montgomery physician J. Marion Sims’ experiments in the 1840s.for his innovation, that innovation stands on the shoulders of eleven enslaved women who underwent non-consensual and unanesthetized procedures for his research.
The statues stand one block from the Equal Justice Initiative’s National Memorial for Peace and Justice and five blocks away from where Sims built his first hospital in 1840.“There’s more people that are wanting to lean into the conversation about health care in this country,” Browder said. “About reckoning with the history and slavery and systemic racism and bias.
“I’ve seen a major difference [in my life] and for me it’s been therapeutic. I’m freer now,” said Browder. “In terms of my business, it’s definitely helped a lot. I was named USA Today’s [Alabama] Woman of the Year and that carries a weight with having to speak truth… It’s broadened not just my horizons, but it’s given us a seat at the table to talk about these issues.
“There’s been a reckoning with medical practitioners as to how they can do better so people are looking for ways to not just have a conversation but to be more productive in how we change this narrative,” said Browder.
