“New York 1962-64,” a new exhibition opening July 22 at the Jewish Museum, features works by Andy Warhol, Louise Nevelson and other artists who found inspiration in the city
Susan DelsonIn the early 1960s New York City exploded into art, as an emerging generation of artists—including Andy Warhol, Robert Rauschenberg and Louise Nevelson—immersed themselves in the city’s invigorating, unpredictable atmosphere. To their eyes, everything was raw material for creative work: car tires, magazine ads, machine parts, subway posters and above all, the rambunctious street life of a city on the upswing.
“New York: 1962-64,” a new exhibition opening July 22 at the city’s Jewish Museum, captures that moment with more than 150 paintings, sculptures, photographs and films. “Artists work with the environment around them,” says the Jewish Museum’s director Claudia Gould, “and there was a lot happening at that time.”
