COMMENTARY: Violence prevention programs in Chicago are showing promising results, but the field needs considerably more resources.

After three violent years, including more than 3,500 shootings and 700 homicides last year, polls show crime and violence are, by far, the top issues.
Data from the Cook County state’s attorney’s office shows that only a third of homicides in Chicago over the last 10 years have led to an arrest. And, in the last three years, citywide arrest rates for homicides have declined to 28% in 2022 from 37% in 2020. We’re going in the wrong direction. There are at least three contributing factors to our low arrest rates. First, the sheer volume of shootings is overwhelming. Second, no one is accountable. And third, trust levels among people and police are low due to a long history of abuse. Even cooperating witnesses who we know routinely report negative experiences with police investigators. Until Chicago gets serious about police reform, we will continue to have low arrest and homicide clearance rates, no matter how many detectives we have.
