The fifth year of work at the cemetery housing remains from the former Carlisle Indian Industrial School yielded seven repatriations, with an eighth grave containing remains that were not those of the listed child.
The U.S. Army disinterred remains of eight Carlisle Indian School students beginning June 11, 2022The remains of children found in seven of the eight gravesites at the Carlisle Indian Industrial School have been returned to their tribal families, the U.S. Army said Thursday.
The Army intends to continue the process in the coming years, which has been done at the request by tribes who have members buried at the site. As with the inconsistencies found in prior years, the Army said this is likely due to the fact that the children’s graves were moved in 1927 from their original location elsewhere on the grounds of what is now the Carlisle Barracks and Army War College.
With this year’s return of seven sets of remains, a total of 28 successful repatriations have occurred in the past five years - but there are still believed to be over 150 graves of Native American children at the Carlisle Barracks, with some sites unmarked. Raleigh James of the Washoe tribe, who arrived at Carlisle July 20, 1898, age 18, and died April 18, 1900.
