Elected officials across Arizona are demanding that President Joe Biden make time during his trip to the state later this week to visit the Mexico border and see how out of control the immigrant crisis has become.
Frustrated lawmakers, law enforcement, and mayors told the Washington Examiner that a trip to the entrenched border state without acknowledging the chaotic situation was not an option.
The White House announced last week that Biden would attend a $3,300-per-plate Democratic fundraiser Wednesday and then an event honoring the late Sen. John McCain in Phoenix on Thursday. Border Patrol data released last weekend showed that 11,000 immigrants were arrested for entering the country illegally last week. Many are released into the communities after processing, placing a burden on local and state governments.
"If the president's security situation makes it impossible for him to visit the border while he is in Arizona, then that should be an indicator of how critical the situation is," Nicholls said in a statement Wednesday."If he will not go see the border, he could convene with the group of a dozen Arizonan leaders while on his trip to hear about the crisis and its local impacts directly, instead of continuing to ignore it.
