Explaining the rationale behind his decision, he said that he felt he "might as well" do what he had set out to do as he said he had "five hours to kill" and "nothing else to do" and that Sinead was waiting for the op. This meant the operation was brought forward, so there was no chance that Tom would get there in time for the birth.
