The European Union plans to launch a formal probe into Apple's App Store after Spotify accused the Californian tech giant of"tilting the playing field to disadvantage competitors,"The European Commission, an executive arm of the EU tasked with implementing decisions, will reportedly launch an antitrust investigation into Apple's conduct in the coming weeks.in March. In the complaint, Spotify argues that Apple has behaved unlawfully and abused its App Store dominance.
"Apple requires that Spotify and other digital services pay a 30 percent tax on purchases made through Apple's payment system, including upgrading from our free to our premium service," Spotify chief executive Daniel Ek said in"If we pay this tax, it would force us to artificially inflate the price of our premium membership well above the price of Apple Music. And to keep our price competitive for our customers, that isn't something we can do.
However, it faces stiff competition from Apple, Google, and Amazon, who have all built their own rival platforms.
