The deal could be announced as soon as next week, according to the report.

Intel currently provides LTE modem chips for Apple's latest generation of iPhones. But after Apple and Qualcomm settled a legal battle in April over patent licensing practices, the two companies announced that Apple would again start buying modem technology from Qualcomm.

Hours after the settlement, Intel announced that it would no longer develop its next-generation 5G modem chip. Several analysts have said that 5G is a critical technology for Apple that could spur a major increase in upgrades when the technology is integrated into iPhones,
