WhatApp's brilliant new update is a game-changer for its 2 billion users...
Reported Pegasus attacks and Apple’s decision to deploy an AI filter to detect nude images sent to or from minors have tainted the intrinsic sense of end-to-end security, and now there’s a new area where iMessage continues to fall further behind.
Now WhatsApp has taken the next step—and it’s a radical change. Users who update their apps have the option to select a timeframe for individual chats—24 hours to 90 days. That is a significant improvement on what we had before. More importantly, though, WhatsApp has now matched Signal and offers default disappearing messages for all new chats—Signal added this earlier in the year. This is significant. Up until now, most of us store messages long-term, indefinitely essentially. But we are starting to see a functionality shift towards secure messaging being more like face-to-face conversations, which are not stored forever by default.
Just think of the benefits of photos and videos shared with colleagues or on nights out not being stored in countless devices and cloud backups, or those sensitive images shared in past relationships. Yes, saving images and screenshots remains a risk, but that’s very different to saving by default in databases that can be searched.
