For the 1st time, an independent repair shop—large or small—will have access to Apple-genuine parts, tools, repair manuals and diagnostics and other resources so they can perform repairs
The prospect of fixing a broken iPhone can be daunting. You'd like to go to a local store but they can't help because they're not authorized and, anyway, can you be sure if the parts they use are genuine? Apple, long the guardian of the exceptional user experience, has until now been very cautious about who can sort repairs. That's just changed.
Until now, you needed to be in the Apple Authorized Service Providers scheme, of which there are 5,000 plus worldwide but it hasn’t been easy to join. More people will be able to sign up. “To better meet our customers’ needs, we’re making it easier for independent providers across the US to tap into the same resources as our Apple Authorized Service Provider network,” said Jeff Williams, Apple’s chief operating officer, in a statement seen by Forbes.
This is all in addition to the recent major expansion of its authorized service network into every Best Buy store in the U.S., tripling the number of AASP locations in the States compared to three years ago.
