Agricultural Producers Association of Saskatchewan (APAS) has requested the Senate of Canada to pass Bill C-234 by June 30.

“If this fall’s harvest, where the grain is coming out tough, we’re going to be needing that propane and natural gas for the fall and we would like to have this in place before then.”is passed, Prybylski said, it could potentially save farmers from paying thousands of dollars in carbon taxes. It depends how large of a crop a producer needs to dry, Prybylski said, but for some the cost can be upwards of $10,000.

Farmers still have to pay other expenses for their production. The costs of propane and natural gas are “significant,” Prybylski said. If it’s another wet harvest, farmers could also “Any producers that have to dry grain, the only options are using natural gas or propane, and the carbon tax on the natural gas and propane is getting to be quite a significant cost that comes off of farmers’ bottom line.”

Proposals for farmers moving to renewable energy have been brought up as an alternative, notably by Liberal MP Ryan Turnbull and Environmental Defence. Increased access to financing for farmers to work toward using renewable energy resources has also been discussed, but farmers say renewable energy would not be a feasible alternative at this time, Prybylski said.
