An anti-religion group's complaint about a college football coach assisting in a student's baptism is based on a 'twisted' read of the First Amendment, a legal scholar said.
More than 200 students at Auburn University were baptized in a single evening this week after a campus worship program that was reportedly attended by hundreds.
On Friday, the Freedom From Religion Foundation sent a letter to Auburn University President Christopher Roberts warning that more than 200 student baptisms, one of which was assisted by Hugh Freeze, somehow violated the Constitution’s Establishment Clause. But Tyson Langhofer, senior counsel and director of the Center for Academic Freedom with Alliance Defending Freedom, is calling FFRF’s letter a"twisted interpretationThe baptisms took place Tuesday night at a lake at Auburn's Red Barn venue, about half a mile from Neville Arena, site of a"Unite Auburn" worship event that drew a massive crowd.
"Auburn University is a public university, not a religious one," FFRF stated in its letter."It is inappropriate and unconstitutional for University employees to use their University position to organize, promote, or participate in a religious worship event. Nor can Auburn’s coaches proselytize or participate in religious activities with students or hire a chaplain to do so."Langhofer, however, says FFRF’s letter itself is"unconstitutional.
