“It’s with a heavy heart that I rise to inform members of my resignation,” Rota said following Nazi war veteran controversy.

“I think the Speaker should listen to members of the House and step down,” she said.Government House leader Karina Gould also said she didn’t see any way for Rota to keep the Liberal party’s support.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau stopped short of calling on Rota to resign but declined to express confidence in Rota continuing in the position. During the weekend, Hunka was publicly identified as having served in the First Ukrainian Division, also known as the Waffen-SS Galicia Division or the SS 14th Waffen Division, a Nazi unit organized largely of Ukrainian volunteers to fight the Soviets.

The NDP and the Bloc had already asked Rota formally to resign, arguing that he had lost the confidence of the House. On Tuesday, Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre joined the calls for Rota’s resignation, while blaming Trudeau for the scandal.
