An ice shelf the size of New York City has collapsed in East Antarctica, an area long thought to be stable and not hit much by climate change

Satellite images show the 460 square-mile Conger Ice Shelf disintegrated. Ice shelves are permanent sheets of ice that take thousands of years to form.
