Brewers' score in just one inning again, but they score five runs in that inning; Padres' comeback falls short
The Padres chose Pedro Avila to start Saturday’s game because they felt he gave them the best chance to win.Avila was giving them a chance on Saturday, same as he had done in the extended relief appearances that earned him the start. The Brewers scored five runs in the fifth inning and held on for a 5-4 victory.
It was the seventh consecutive victory for the Brewers, leaders of the National League Central. The loss dropped the Padres to eight games below .500 and far enough back in the NL wild-card race that it hardly matters. They, in fact, are now tied with the Nationals for the fifth-worst record in the league. For the record, they are 7½ games behind the Cubs in the race for the NL’s sixth playoff spot with 32 games remaining.
With Christian Yelich up, a double steal resulted in Monasterio popping up from his slide into third base and running home when catcher Luis Campusano’s errant throw sailed into left field. Peralta has been excellent lately, however, posting a 1.47 ERA over his previous four starts. And he finished Saturday allowing one hit besides Bogaerts’ homer.
