Jordan Poole has struggled mightily this NBA postseason, leading some competitors to question how valuable the fourth-year guard really is.
, several rival executives were critical of Poole’s play and the Warriors’ decision to award him with a four-year contract extension, worth up to $140 million before the season.“He doesn’t defend, doesn’t really create for others and that Draymond [Green sucker punch] incident wasn’t a great look for either of them,” the executive continued. “The intel on Poole [and his presence in the locker room] isn’t great.
“I don’t know why the Warriors rushed to overpay him. They could have given him the same money this summer. At least then, they’d know what his contract would mean to their situation. He’s earning more than [Andrew] Wiggins, and Wiggins is way more valuable than Poole.”The 23-year-old, 2019 first-round pick averaged 20.4 points on 43 percent shooting this year, but he’s taken a clear step back during the Warriors’ playoff run.
Poole is averaging just 10.5 points per game on 34.2 percent shooting this postseason, including just 11 total points over Golden State’s last three games against the Los Angeles Lakers in their second-round series. Warriors head coach Steve Kerr has cut Poole’s minutes to just 21.6 a game, down from 30 minutes a game during the regular season.“It’s hard to give up a young guy who is talented,” one Western Conference executive told Bleacher Report. “If they want to cut salary, then maybe they can get veterans on expiring contracts to help them win next year, then figure it out after that.” in Golden State’s locker room following their Game 4 loss to the Lakers on Monday.
Down 3-1 in the series against the Lakers, Golden State faces elimination with Game 5 set for Wednesday night at Chase Center.
