Ohtani gives up five runs, four of them on a pair of two-run homers, and the Angels don’t score in seven innings against Valdez in a 6-2 loss.
HOUSTON — The Angels needed everything to go right – their pitching, defense and hitting – to beat Houston Astros ace Famber Valdez.Shohei Ohtani made a few mistakes in his six innings on the mound, and two of them left the ballpark. That was compounded by the fact that the home runs each followed infield hits when the Angels were unable to make plays in the field.
The Angels also lost shortstop Zach Neto, who was removed from the game with left foot soreness a few innings after he was hit by a pitch. There was no immediate word on the severity of the injury.Ohtani’s previous two starts were good, after a rough four-game stretch, but he took a step back this time, allowing five runs.
That was the sixth homer of the season that Ohtani has allowed on a sweeper, equaling the total that he gave up all of last season with that pitch. In between, the Astros scratched across a run with a two-out rally against Ohtani in the fifth inning. Ohtani walked Jeremy Peña. Alvarez then reached on an infield single, and Alex Bregman dropped a bloop hit into left, driving in Peña.
