River forecasters are looking at our melting snowpack to project if and when various Utah creeks and rivers will flood. Here are the results of their latest forecast.
Alex Klivecka puts down sandbags as Emigration Creek rises in Emigration Canyon on Wednesday, April 12, 2023. National Weather Service data shows where and when key regional creeks are likely to flood., I gave our readers the flooding library.
Of course, flooding can also happen in other ways than the rivers simply flowing too quickly, too high. Debris can get caught, unexpected washouts can happen and so forth. In particular, City Creek looks very likely to flood in some places. Farther south in the valley, Big Cottonwood Creek could easily go either way. We would have to get relatively unlucky with our warming cycle to see significant flooding at the other creeks moving forward.
Let’s zoom in on City Creek, for example, given its high probability of having flooding flows there. The NWS says that: • At 330 cubic feet per second flow, major flooding will occur along North Temple near 2nd West and areas west. Additionally, 200 South will receive major flooding in the form of ponding throughout the area.current forecasting says we have a 90-100% chance of that first outcome, about a 25-50% chance of the second outcome, and very little chance, under 5%, at the third outcome.
