He worked in 'The Pit of Nations'
Football legend Andy Cole has spoken of how his father was a 'pioneer' as he worked in one of Nottinghamshire's collieries for more than two decades. The footballer is an all-time Premier League great, with his and Alan Shearer’s joint record for the most goals scored in a 42-game season only recently broken by Manchester City's Erling Haaland.
Lincoln’s story was brought to life at The Digging Deep, Coal Miners of African Caribbean Heritage exhibition, curated by historian Norma Gregory, at the Woodhorn Museum in Northumberland, three years ago. It was part of The Black Miners Museum Project, which collected more than 240 names of miners and interviewed over 60 of them.
“I remember my dad telling me that he’d had a bad accident once when he was down there and they all looked after him. He had a fall, injuring his pelvis. They were straight away all over him, checking how bad it was, and helping him to safety. It really struck me. “We’ve all heard the terminology ‘No Irish, no Black, no dogs.’ My dad went through all that kind of nonsense. They were sold a dream. They arrived thinking that it was paved in gold. They were told, ‘Once you come, you will help to rebuild England, you’re part of the Commonwealth and whatever happens, you will be looked after to the hilt’.
“I always say, I could never have dealt with things like that. But he explained to me that, well, back in those days, that’s what you had to do.” “The reason I disagree with my Dad was because I hadn’t experienced racism yet. Or at least I hadn’t realised it. He’d just say, ‘Within time, you will see’. And now, at the age of 51, I have more than enough experience.”
