'The result went the SDLP's way this time, but the party has many more electoral fights ahead'
The election recount for a disputed seat in Derry represents a relief for the SDLP, disappointment for Alliance and a cock-up for the council.
It would have been a boost for Alliance had it managed to regain one of the two seats it lost on Derry and Strabane council. Had the party not pursued it, they would have been left wondering if the 150-odd votes not transferred from two DUP candidates would have changed the outcome.Alliance had a successful council election overall, mirroring its rise in last year's Stormont poll to become the third-largest party.
The outcome is still to be formally certified by the High Court next week, but Martin Reilly retaining his seat will have the SDLP breathing a sigh of relief.
