'President Biden wants to convince Americans he's in charge and understands the heartache caused by a week of politically damaging chaos in Kabul unleashed by his botched Afghanistan withdrawal plan,' StCollinson writes. | Analysis

President Joe Biden's warning about the"dangerous" risks to US troops and a firefight at Kabul airport lay bare the grave political peril he faces even as he seeks to stamp control on chaos sparked by his botched Afghanistan withdrawal plan.

In a national address, Biden spoke on Sunday about the security threat posed by the Afghan affiliate of ISIS as US troops seek to keep up the pace of evacuations of Americans and eligible Afghans following the Taliban's takeover.Biden's White House Underscoring the fragile security situation, German military officials said a firefight broke out at the airport's North Gate between Afghan security forces and unknown assailants. One member of the Afghan security forces was killed and three were injured.Any deterioration of an already tense security situation would not only exacerbate the already considerable risks of the operation but would pile fierce pressure on the White House over the management of the Afghan withdrawal.

There has rarely been a moment in this presidency when trust in the President's word and his truthfulness has been more important. The rampage of the Delta variant of Covid-19 across the country is now averaging 150,000 new cases per day, six weeks after Biden declared partial independence from the virus.
