Breaking down the drama that took place during the mid-season finale of HBO Max's 'Gossip Girl.'
The new HBO Max reiteration of the beloved, cult-status teen drama has so far had a slow buildup, but rightfully so. This is a new crew of Upper East Siders after all, and the show's original core audience needs to get to know them properly.
Alas, Zoya doesn't dump Obie. Instead, she invites herself to dinner with Obie, his mother, Audrey , Aki , and his parents . As one could expect, Zoya's self-invite is a recipe for disaster, because not only does she engage in a debate with Aki's father, Rodger , regarding billionaires owning media companies and the right to protest, but Obie has the nerve to shush her and ask her to essentially say less in order to not embarrass him in front of his mother and family friends.
The next day, after seeing Obie participate in a protest outside his mother's own real estate property on Instagram Live, Julien decides to support her former beau—surprising Zoya, who also shows up to the demonstration and who immediately leaves after confronting Julien over still being in love with Obie. It's an emotional climax between the two sisters, overshadowed only by the unsettling sensation of watching a political protest take place on.
By the episode's end, Audrey and Aki stop suppressing their mutual feelings for Max and engage in a sexy threesome. Now, this is the type of drama we've been waiting for. Less student-teacher sexual trysts and more healthy, open acceptance of blooming teenaged sensuality, please! The mid-season finale assures fervent fans of the show that more mess lies ahead, when the show returns later this year. Showrunner Joshua Safran took toahead of the episode's release, sharing that it would be the last installment"for a bit," leaving us dizzy with questions about what comes next.
