The exhibition does not explore Albert Einstein’s views on freedom of expression
“FREEDOM OF TEACHING and of opinion in book or press is the foundation for the sound and natural development of any people.” In China even uttering these words in public might get a person in trouble. But it was Albert Einstein who wrote them and he is officially revered. The quotation appears on bookmarks and postcards at the gift shop of the World Expo Museum in Shanghai, where the scientist’s work is being celebrated in an exhibition that opened in August .
This year, especially, the authorities are keen to avoid tricky questions about science and dissent. It is the 30th anniversary of pro-democracy unrest in Tiananmen Square that was crushed by the Chinese army with huge loss of life.
