America's silver years | Opinion
. These are very different books, but both suggest in a variety of ways that we’ve ridden the ride of Enlightenment thought to its end, and the innovation and creativity, energy and dreams that marked the 20th century feel like they’re fading a bit without some type of renewed commitment or revival.
But we aren’t really content with where we find ourselves, are we? This isn’t an afterglow but rather feels like a period of unhealth. For the first time ever, there’s a widespread belief evident in polling that our best days are not ahead of us; that the American Dream is out of reach; that our kids are going to have it less good than we did; we are dying earlier and getting more lonely.
To stall off aging in the human body, Sinclair prescribes targeted exposure to stressors. His No. 1 recommendation is intermittent fasting, but also being cold , and bursts of hard exercise. He also recommends restraint from many of the things that feel good: sugar, alcohol, smoking, being sedentary, sun, always setting the thermostat to 70 degrees so our body temperature barely fluctuates, staying up late. These aren’t neutral to aging, they speed it up.
Similarly, restraint from things that “feel good” makes me think of the horrible polarization and divisive language and Twitter battles which are not neutral to democratic health, but detrimental to it. Putting off big, necessary reforms, like immigration and education, feels like pushing off knee surgery from 60 to 90 years old — ill advised.
