“Music of Miles Davis: A Celebration” is being curated by Erin Davis and Vincent Wilburn, Jr. at the SFJAZZ Center.
SFJAZZ is celebrating Miles Davis in anything but a silent way.
It’s hosting four concerts — each one focused on a different period in the great trumpeter/bandleader/composer’s career — from May 25-28 at SFJAZZ Center in San Francisco. The four-night stand, dubbed “Music of Miles Davis: A Celebration,” is being curated by two of the late musician’s family members — son Erin Davis and nephew Vincent Wilburn, Jr. — who manage the Miles Davis Estate.
“Erin and I have worked with SF Jazz several times over the last few years and it has always been a great experience,” says Vince Wilburn, Jr. “Here we have curated four nights of Miles, each one celebrating a different period in his career and featuring an incredible lineup of musicians.” Wilburn isn’t just a curator of this event. He’s also a performer, set to take the SFJAZZ Center stage on the final show of the run, on May 28, with band M.E.B. The group, which celebrates Davis’ electric period, recently released the studio debut “That You Not Dare to Forget.”The series kicks off with a look at Davis’ hard bop first quintet of the 1950s , the sextet session that recorded the iconic “Kind of Blue” album, and 1960s second quintet .
