Authorities believe the 88-year-old woman accidentally fell into a pond while gardening and was attacked by the alligator.
BLUFFTON TOWNSHIP, South Carolina — An 88-year-old woman was killed Monday morning in what authorities believe was an alligator attack, the fourth fatality involving an alligator in the U.S. this year, according to reports.
A news release from the Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office says deputies and emergency workers were called to the Sun City Hilton Head 55-plus community at about 11:15 a.m. When they arrived, they found both the victim, identified as Nancy Becker, and an alligator nearby. Reports say the alligator appeared to be guarding Becker’s body in the water.that authorities believe Becker accidentally fell into a pond while gardening, then was attacked.
Becker’s body was recovered. Reports say the alligator, which was 9-feet, 8-inches long, was found Monday afternoon and was euthanized.this is the second fatal alligator attack this year in South Carolina and the fourth nationwide. The Island Packet reports it’s the third alligator attack in Sun City Hilton Head in three years.
