Allen fire, PD to get new safety equipment
Emergency services in Allen will soon have new vehicle routers and antennas with integrated GPS systems to help fire and police dispatchers improve vehicle routing and decision-making.
The new equipment, approved Nov. 8 by the Allen City Council, will also have 5G capability for increased speed and reliability, and the ability to stream vehicle and bodycam video directly to the cloud, according to a cityThe current vehicle routing technology reached the end of its service life and will no longer be supported by the vendor, according to the release.
The council also approved a $205,000 purchase for protective equipment for the Allen Fire Department, which includes new bunker gear and new body armor. Bunker gear, the protective gear firefighters wear, has a 10-year maximum lifespan but when used in front-line service may only last for five years, so the department purchases new gear on a rotating basis for the department, according to the release.
The new body armor includes trauma plates and helmets for firefighters to use when they’re on a coordinated response with the Police Department..
