Now Florida's breaststroke record holder, BollesSchool senior Will Heck heads the Times-Union's AllFirstCoast team in boys swimming.
"What was different about this senior year is the leadership component, and he really embraced that," Bolles swimming coach Peter Verhoef said."He wasn't only focusing on what he was doing but what he could do for the team."
Heck, who also won the All-First Coast award in 2020, closes his Bulldogs career as the latest in a long line of Bolles swimmers to capture the Florida High School Athletic Association meet record, including James Daugherty and Paul DeGrado within the last half-dozen years. Heck also adjusted his swimming schedule this season. In past years, he raced the 50 freestyle as his second event and regularly contended for the state championship, but in 2022, he shifted to the 200 IM as part of an effort to maximize Bolles' total score."Back in my freshman year, my friends and I said we wanted to win a national championship for Bolles, which hadn't been done for seven or eight years," he said.
Following the high school season, he also won the 100 breast in December at the Speedo Winter Junior Nationals in Greensboro, N.C., competing against the leading young swimmers from the eastern half of the country.
