'It’s like everybody’s talking about us and no one’s talking to us, and that’s a big part of the problem.'
The Domestic Workers Alliance and Black Future Labs are both looking at the intersections of race, class, and gender. At the Domestic Workers Alliance, our work is very much about the right to respect and dignity for the people who care for the most important aspects of our lives. And we fundamentally believe that care is not an individual problem, but that it needs to be a collective project.
I’m also frustrated that the way Black communities are engaged is symbolic and not substantive. And so what we end up seeing is not a massive push from the Democratic Party, for example, to do town halls in every Black community across America. What we see are people who are seeking candidacy sitting with Black leaders over a plate of untouched soul food for a photo op.
The last time Black people were surveyed at this scale was when slavery was formally abolished in this country, and the United States government was trying to figure out how to integrate Black communities into an infrastructure that had systemically and systematically excluded us. We found that there’s a real hunger from our communities to be counted, to be heard, to be engaged with [correctly] and to be taken seriously.recently endorsed Elizabeth Warren for president.
Existing on our own terms is about being courageous enough to say, “I really don’t care how it’s always gone. It needs to go differently, and I’m willing to lean into that.”
