In Alice Wu's new Netflix film, a gay high schooler helps an earnest jock win over the girl they’ve both fallen for
-esque tale in which Ellie ends up helping earnest jock Paul win Aster’s affections—finding a meaningful friendship with Paul in the process—queerness is never framed as an internalized affliction or a means to trauma.
Wu spent those years largely away from the industry, moving to San Francisco to help her mother, who had fallen temporarily ill. She found an unorthodox way to motivate herself to get back to film work: “I wrote a check for $1,000 to the NRA, and I gave it to my friend,” Wu recalled. She gave herself five weeks to write the script forWu successfully completed a draft in a stressful flurry, perhaps partly because the idea for the film had been germinating for almost a decade.
As Ellie and Paul work together, their version of a happy ending becomes less about who ends up with whom. “That’s really just a red herring. Who gets the girl—not only is it not the important thing in this movie, it’s not the important thing in life,” Wu said. “The important thing in life is who you end up connecting with that ends up helping you become the person you need to be.”
