The Alameda County District Attorney’s Office charged a 26-year-old San Lorenzo man with multiple charges Thursday in connection with a violent attack on a 75-year-old man earlier this week.
While attending to the man, who told a deputy through a bleeding mouth that he didn’t know what had happened to him, another deputy began searching nearby and notified a man across the street at Ashland Reach skatepark, 16335 East 14th St.
The man, later identified as Rafael Betancourt, made eye contact before putting down his head, walking away and trying to get rid of the skateboard he was holding in nearby bushes. As deputies approached him before taking him into custody, he began washing his hands at a water fountain by the bushes.
Surveillance-camera footage from outside the store showed a man wearing the same clothing as Betancourt holding the skateboard and talking to the victim near a bus stop in front of the parking lot. The footage showed the man wielding the skateboard to hit the victim’s head. When the victim fell to the ground and passed out, the man was seen standing over him and jabbing the skateboard into the victim’s face.
The victim, who was taken to a hospital, was diagnosed with a brain bleed and a two-inch laceration that severed his left ear. He was later listed in stable condition and expected to survive, but he told deputies he couldn’t remember anything from the day before his assault. Betancourt was arrested on suspicion of multiple charges and taken to Santa Rita Jail before an arraignment hearing Wednesday at Dublin’s East County Hall of Justice.
