Alabama will get $276 million settlement over opioid epidemic.

Alabama will receive $276 million from three companies involved in the production and distribution of prescription opioids that once fueled the overdose crisis.

“These three settlement agreements affirm my decision to decline participation in the national opioid settlements, which did not adequately acknowledge the unique harm that Alabamians have endured and would have redirected millions of dollars to bigger states that experienced a less severe impact,” Marshall said in a statement.

The settlement funds are supposed to be used to repair some of the damage caused by the opioid epidemic in Alabama. The state has long led the nation in the number of opioids prescribed per person, although that number has fallen sharply during the last 10 years. The state also settled with McKinsey & Company in February 2021 for a total of $9 million for its role in the opioid crisis. That smaller settlement was distributed directly by the Alabama Attorney General’s Office to agencies affected by substance use.
