An 8-year-old boy's estate gets a multimillion dollar verdict in a lawsuit against an Alabama social worker and the child's foster care provider.

A Montgomery County jury has returned a $15 million verdict in a wrongful death lawsuit involving an 8-year-old boy who had sickle cell anemia.

The verdict was returned Aug. 5 against two defendants following trial. The defendants were Kristi Kelley, who the lawsuit said was a social worker from the state Department of Human Resources, and Becky Van Gilder, who the lawsuit said was a foster care provider for the child.According to the lawsuit, the child was placed in custody of DHR in February 2013 and Kelley placed the child with Van Gilder.

The lawsuit said the child began having breathing problems three months later. The child was taken to a Montgomery hospital, then transferred to Children’s of Alabama in Birmingham. The child died two days after the onset of the breathing problems the lawsuit said resulted from his condition not being properly monitored.

The child’s estate was represented by Andrew Moak of Alexander Shunnarah Trial Attorneys and Brett Turnbull and Robert LeMoine of Turnbull, Holcomb & LeMoine. Note to readers: if you purchase something through one of our affiliate links we may earn a commission.
