James was convicted of capital murder twice for the shooting death of Faith Hall in Birmingham. Hall was James’ former girlfriend and was killed on Aug. 15, 1994. According to a federal court ruling, James and Hall dated in the early 1990s and had a “volatile” relationship. Court records said, “James stalked and harassed after they broke up, showing up uninvited at her home on several occasions and threatening to kill and her ex-husband.”
After several appeals, the Alabama Court of Criminal Appeals upheld James’ conviction in 2010. The Alabama Supreme Court declined to review James’ case in 2017. James appealed to the federal appeals court, arguing his lawyers were ineffective during the sentencing phase of his second trial because they failed to investigate or present evidence on his behalf.The court’s published opinion
