Coal miners in Alabama have been striking for months, and they aren't backing down, battling not just for their rights as workers, but for what some believe to be the rights of working people across the country.

ABC News’ Elwyn Lopez reports on divisions in the tight-knit town of Brookwood, Alabama, where mine workers are in their fourth month of strikes after rejecting a contract they say was “unfair.”Coal miners in Alabama have been striking for months, and they aren't backing down, battling not just for their rights as workers, but for what some believe to be the rights of working people across the country.

While the miners hold the picket line, Haeden Wright has been working with other miners' spouses to help support the so-called strike families. She's been helping to run the pantry, which is supported through donations and includes everything from clothes to baby hygiene products. "It wasn't difficult to go on strike because we knew we had to fight for what we deserved," he said."We wanted dignity back in our job."Braxton Wright says he comes from a family of miners and has been working at mine now owned by Warrior Met Coal for 17 years. The conditions the miners are striking against stem from 2016, when Warrior Met Coal took over ownership of the mine after its previous operator went bankrupt.

"I give you my youth, I'll give you my time," he said, adding that he'd worked there six days a week for 17 years."You bought an underground coal mine. You knew what the wages were when you bought it. We saved this coal mine. ... We've saved it from fires, we've saved it from explosions, we've saved it from a lot of things."Chris Lowery, who works for Warrior Met Coal in Alabama, has been striking for fairer wages and benefits.
