In honor of Veterans Day, the Akron Municipal Court will recognize Black Civil War veteran and inventor Henry Pickett at 1 p.m. on Wednesday at the Civil War Memorial Chapel at Glendale Cemetery.
AKRON, Ohio – For the fourth year, the Akron Municipal Court will commemorate Veterans Day by hosting an event in November to honor a local veteran.
Brooke Taylor, a local author and radio personality who is the wife of a veteran. She will discuss ways military spouses can support their significant other and how civilians can lend support to military families. A Black Civil War veteran, Pickett was born in 1826. He joined the 27th United States Regiment in 1864, serving in Georgia, South Carolina and Florida until 1865. Pickett was also an inventor – he applied for a patent for improvements in plastering scaffolds with the United States Patent and Trademark Office in 1874, according to the court. He also opened Pickett’s Hall on Main Street in Akron. The community venue hosted dances, club meetings and other events.
