Ex-soldier David Holden to be sentenced next week over killing of Aidan McAnespie in 1988
Aidan McAnespie, 23, was hit in the back by a bullet as he walked to a Gaelic football matchA former British soldier convicted of killing an unarmed man at a border checkpoint in County Tyrone in 1988 will be sentenced next week, a Crown Court judge has said.
He also concluded Holden's explanation as to how the weapon came to be fired was both entirely unconvincing and a deliberately false account.Holden, who was 18 at the time, was on his first day of checkpoint duties with the Grenadier Guards.'Take no chances' "This was the ultimate 'take no chances' situation because the risk of disaster was so great," he said.
In December 1988, Holden was charged by the Army under Section 69 of the Army Act 1955 with the offence of "prejudice to good order and military discipline'' and was fined £370.86 by his commanding officer.
