Fashion designer Matilda Marginal discusses her collection for Meow Wolf's Absolute Rubbish: A Trashion Show.
Photo by Alexandra SheremetFashion isn’t always about just wearing chic clothing. It can also be an expression of who you are, and sometimes it makes a statement — a bold one. That’s the case withs collections, in which fashion, art and sustainability collide in unconventional pieces that aren’t about adhering to fashion trends or even predominant beauty; they are there to make people think.
Her interest in fashion was inspired by her mom, who"was beautiful and wanted to look good, but in Russia, we didn’t have a lot of goods or a variety in clothes or food," Marginal says."This made people be more creative. My mom was always sewing to make clothes for herself and the family.” She started playing with styling clothes on herself and her dolls using her parents' clothes, which gave her the spark to create her own clothes.
While some may want new materials rather than used, Marginal sees the beauty in the deconstruction. Her sustainability efforts got her included in Meow Wolf’s upcoming, which happens Tuesday, September 19, and features creations by artists using repurposed materials. Marginal says that while she already has many pieces that would fit with that theme, she decided to show audiences something new and unexpected made from surprising materials not typically used for clothes.
Marginal admits that creating art helps her cope with the things she sees that upset her. “To be honest, I don’t know what I would do if I couldn’t express myself.”
