The subplot to Sunday's game features several developments that are quite uncommon in the modern NFL.

If Vizcaino is insurance in the event Maher falters during the week of practice, the team may be setting their incumbent kicker up for failure; having someone breathing down his neck all week surely cannot be good for his confidence. Ironically, trouble with extra points last year may have made it difficult for Vizcaino to catch on. He's 11-of-12 on field goals across stints with four teams over the past three years, but missed a whopping five extra points on just 15 attempts in 2021.
Beyond the personnel moves, the team's candid remarks about Maher's performance are also not typical for the NFL, or professional sports generally. Special-teams coordinator John Fassel openly said Tuesday that Maher had the"yips,"as"a state of nervous tension affecting an athlete in the performance of a crucial action."
Fassel also offered explanations for some of Maher's missed extra points. He said that on the second miss, officials prevented holder Bryan Anger from his usual practice of using a piece of painted white grass to mark the spot where he'd be placing the ball. "I hadn't seen any memo or discussion about it. … I didn't even know about it until our holder came up to tell me what happened,"."Supposedly, it was emphasized all season but it's never been brought up to me my whole career. It's not an excuse by any means, just very unique to have that happened."
Fassel said that the team was left with its third kicking ball for the third attempt, and that ball wasn't properly"doctored up" for use prior to the game.
