Clay Aguilar, Deer Park's winning pitcher in the 2017 state championship game, gets some work in at last week's Holiday Baseball Camp. The Florida Complex League Yankees took Aguilar off the 60-day injured list on Nov. 8, clearing him for a potentially stellar 2023 season.Deer Park High School's most famous pitcher since Andy Pettitte will be looking for a bounce-back baseball campaign amongst the palm trees and sunny skies of Florida in 2023.
But the 2022 season turned into a bust for Aguilar when he suffered an oblique strain after the lefthander threw a pitch. Regarded as the third most common baseball injury behind elbow and shoulder injuries, Aguilar was essentially done for the year. Because it's four large muscles, two on each side of the body, one internal, the other external, anyone can get an oblique strain.
There's little trainers can do for an oblique strain. Rest is really the most important treatment and that could mean months, which in Aguilar's case was the prescribed treatment."You can do some treatment but everybody's different. You can either let your body heal or push through it. I was kind of thinking long term. I just wanted to let my body heal itself. It just took a little longer than other people," Aguilar said.
"It's probably the easiest thing to do while playing baseball. That was the big thing when I signed as a junior. My parents said, you're finishing school and I completely agreed," Aguilar said.
