The U.S. finished an astonishing second as the remaining three team members pushed ahead without Biles, who pulled out of the competition after completing the vault, the first of four apparatus. Great Britain was third.
The U.S. was aiming for its third-straight gold in the team competition with Biles, regularly described as the greatest gymnast ever, as its cornerstone. But the U.S. had surprisingly fallen behind Russian athletes in qualifications on Sunday as Biles and other team members made uncharacteristic errors.
When the team final began on Tuesday, the U.S.’s hopes almost immediately unraveled, with Biles at the center of the upset. Biles signaled that she planned to complete an Amanar vault—a roundoff back handspring onto the vaulting table, followed by two and a half twists in the air. Instead, she appeared to complete only one and a half twists, landed bending her knees deep and then left the arena, seemingly injured.
