Then Bnei Herzliya Basket in Israel.Then Trikala Aries in an area of northern Greece where human settlements date to 49,000 B.C.

“But X has a good knowledge of the game. He’s a good person, a good teacher. I’ve seen how he works with younger players over the summer. You have to be able to relate to people to be a good coach, I think. X relates to anybody he’s ever dealt with. He possesses a lot of qualities that make a good coach.”But he got married in 2018, and his son was born in Latvia in March 2020, just days before the league — and Riga airport — shut down for the pandemic.

He saved all his playbooks and has been studying them. He paid closer attention to how his foreign coaches approached their craft. He watched college games in the middle of the night from Europe on his laptop. He reached out to people he knows on staffs at SDSU, Fresno State, Wyoming and Oregon State. He talked to his brother who coaches at Monterey Trail High in the Sacramento suburb of Elk Grove.

“I think it helps players appreciate how hard it is,” Dutcher says of playing in Europe. “You get over there and you’re playing one game a week and practicing twice a day, that’s a hard grind. They’re used to grinding. X is used to putting in the hours. Whether it’s as a player or a young coach, you have to put in the hours, and he’s done that.”
