A change behind the bench wasn’t enough to change the Philadelphia Flyers’ fortunes
Monday’s coaching change came just one week after Fletcher told the media that he hoped to stay the course as the Flyers worked their way out what was then a six-game losing skid . But a 4-1 loss to the New York Rangers last Wednesday was followed by a crushing 7-1 blowout at the hands of the Tampa Bay Lightning on Sunday, and pressed Fletcher into action.
After Monday’s loss, the Flyers’ record for the season slides to 8-11-4, seventh in the Metropolitan Division and nine points out of a wild-card playoff spot in the Eastern Conference. The club sits 28th in scoring, averaging just 2.43 goals per game, and the five-goal night on Monday marks the first time Philadelphia has scored more than three goals since the fifth game of the year — a 5-3 win in Edmonton on Oct. 27.
Once again, Vigneault had success in his first year behind the Flyers’ bench. With a 41-21-7 record through 69 games, Philadelphia was red hot when the coronavirus pause shut down the 2019-20 regular season that March. Fletcher also inked 2020 Selke Trophy winner Sean Couturier to an eight-year contract extension, signed emerging forward Joel Farabee to a five-year extension and handed Hart a three-year bridge deal — while choosing to let captain Claude Giroux play out the last year of his contract ahead of unrestricted free agency.
“I’m not starting any process right now other than trying to get this team back on track,” he said. “I’ve spoken with Mike. He knows there are no promises going forward, but he has his hands on the wheel now. It’s his opportunity to help this team get going in the right direction.
