He would have been happy, win or lose Friday on the opening night of the San Antonio Regional Golden Gloves tournament.
A slimmer and trimmer Olivares defeated Jon Nisperos of Randazzo Brothers Boxing Gym, 2-1, in a men’s senior novice bout in front of a crowd of about 300 at the Second Baptist Church Community Center on the East Side.He credited his trainer, Laura Leija, of Leija Boxing Gym on the South Side, and heart, for the victory. Leija is the cousin of local boxing icon “Jesse” James Leija.
With Leija’s son, James Jr., in his corner, Garcia came out aggressively from the opening bell, throwing fast combinations and punching with authority.He was given a standing-eight count by the referee.
