Adidas’s collab with Universal Standard goes up to a size 4X—and everything is priced between $40 and $80
Photo: Universal Standard Activewear brands have a reputation for failing to carry a wide range of sizes, and sometimes being openly hostile to customers who aren’t a size 4 or 6. But Universal Standard is hoping to change that. The size-inclusive brand partnered with Adidas to make a collection that has every kind of workout garment you’d ever need and goes up to a size 4X. As an added bonus, everything in the collection is priced between $40 and $90.
“There’s this kind of Marie Antoinette attitude towards larger sizes,” says Universal Standard co-founder Alexandra Waldman. “It’s like, Oh, someone’s already made their size. Let them have that.” Sure, Torrid and the sustainable brand Girlfriend Collective do make size-inclusive athletic clothes, but a lot of the bigger players in the field don’t. Lululemon only goes up to a size 14, and Outdoor Voices goes up to a size XL. Nike offers plus sizes up to a size 3X.
Waldman says that with the Adidas capsule, “You can buy great workout gear and look like you’re taken seriously by the activewear industry. It’s not just an old pair of whatever stretches, and an oversized T-shirt.” Alison Stewart, VP of concept development at Adidas, kicked off the project by messaging Universal Standard’s founders Polina Veksler and Waldman on LinkedIn. “This is really just our very first step on a very long journey,” Stewart said of the capsule. The brand will begin to roll out inclusive sizing across all its ranges this fall.
But to start, the collection includes a hoodie, a T-shirt, a tank top, a crop top, long leggings, and biker shorts, available in four colorways and in sizes XXS through 4X.
