The Wild Fish Conservancy Northwest is planning to petition the federal government to designate critical habitat for chinook salmon in Southeast Alaska, Southwest Alaska and Cook Inlet.

The fish conservancy announced its plans in a May 24 letter addressed to the Alaska Department of Fish and Game Commissioner Doug Vincent-Lang. The nonprofit said the petition will be filed under the Endangered Species Act in no sooner than 30 days .

Vincent-Lang further said populations of fish have to reach numbers between 500-1,000 before that species is under threat of extinction. “This is a sort of mean-spirited approach that one particular organization is taking. I think that working together is a lot better, a lot more practical way to reach the same ends that we all want. And that’s the protection of the stock,” Southeast Alaska Guides Association Executive Director Forrest Braden said.

Both Vincent-Lang and the Executive Director of Alaska Trollers Association Amy Daugherty have said they appealed to the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals in the case of the lawsuit that has closed the troll fishery in Southeast Alaska. They are also working to ensure chinook salmon are not added to the Endangered Species Act.
