Activist TamikaDMallory's speech articulated the pain felt by too many Black Americans. “Arrest the cops. Charge the cops. Not just here in Minneapolis. Charge them in every city across America where our people are being murdered. That’s the bottom line.'
,” Mallory says. “There’s more work to be done and we cannot take our eyes off of the ball or we might not see convictions,” she says.
As the child of two civil rights activists, Mallory has been going to protests for as long as she can remember. Even still, she feels that we're living through an extraordinary time, calling it “one of the most courageous and bold moments in American history.” Mallory recognizes a new level of empowerment in today’s protestors. “We’re not asking and begging for respect, we’re demanding it.”
But, she notes, this moment isn’t for the faint of heart. “This is for people who are clear on demanding justice and fighting for what they know is right.” And what Mallory wants young people and new activists to know is that not everyone protesting is an ally. “These things have happened since the Civil Rights Movement,” she says. “There were detractors.” In the end, Mallory tells me that organization is key. “It’s important to stay focused on what we’re fighting for.
While the roles are different, the responsibility to act falls on everyone. “You can’t delegate. This moment requiresMallory is aware that continuously fighting for the cause can take its toll. “I’m wise enough to know that we can’t fight for the long haul if we don’t ensure our mental health is in place,” she says. “And sometimes you just have to take a break.” Mallory values the small things: family, food, and a little self-indulgence.
