Crusius left behind a manifesto with white nationalist and anti-immigrant themes on the online message board 8chan shortly before the attack. The screed cited a prior mosque shooting in New Zealand and the far-right conspiracy theory known as the “Great Replacement” — the racist idea that liberals are orchestrating an influx of immigrants to weaken the political and economic power of white citizens — as inspirations for the attack at the Walmart, according to FBI investigation reports.
Crusius bought an AK-47 assault-style rifle over the Internet, drove from his home in Allen to El Paso and on Aug. 3, 2019, and targeted Hispanics at one of the busiest Walmarts in the city. The store also attracted shoppers from Ciudad Juarez, across the border from El Paso.
